RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
