Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
